Milton Abbey teams complete Ten Tors 2016!

Well done to Milton Abbey's Junior and Senior Ten Tors Teams, who completed this year's challenge over the course of the weekend.

Ten Tors is an event on Dartmoor which is both organised and Sponsored by 1 Artillery Brigade British Army.  A tor is a granite outcrop usually located on or near a hilltop and participants must visit ten of these as part of a prearranged route - 35 miles for the Junior team and 45 for the Seniors. Details of the route are released the day before the expedition to allow planning to take place.

Having completed numerous training expeditions the teams made their way to Okehampton to set up camp and then spent Friday preparing for the challenge.  As usual teams were awakened at 0500hrs on Saturday morning to the sound of 'Chariots of Fire' blasting through the PA system. By this time Mr Law was already well into the preparation of a hearty breakfast with only a head torch to light his workstation and Mrs Dal-Din was equally as busy helping everyone to get organised.  After a sort out of equipment it was off to the start:  a fly past of Royal Navy Merlin Helicopters, a recital of the Ten Tors prayer, the Artillery Guns fire and then they were off!

The teams made excellent progress on the Saturday having walked for 14 -15 hours carrying a 40-50 lbs rucksack over harsh undulating terrain in hot breezy conditions. Sunday morning saw the teams up at 0430hrs in order to be on the move by 0600hrs, and on Sunday the teams arrived back at Okehampton between 1300hrs and 1330hrs, having completed their arduous overnight, self-sufficient expeditions of 35 and 45 miles respectively.

Well done to both teams on completing this fantastic challenge.
