Sports Report: Week 1

A round-up of sports results from Week 1 of the Michaelmas Term, by Mr Lawes, Director of Sport.

Rugby

The 1st XV ran out 27-7 winners at Warminster.  The game was marshalled superbly by fly half and 'player of the match' Stephen who kept putting Milton Abbey in the right place on the pitch with his kicking game.  The team then worked extremely hard to convert this positioning into tries.  Debutant Matteo deserves a special mention for his powerful ball carrying as does front row veteran Will for his work at the break down.  A great start.

The U15s had a fine 47-5 win.  The match was close for the first 15 minutes but the MA boys soon started to gain confidence and dominated the rest of the match.  Fantastic commitment from the forwards allowing the ball to be passed quickly to our backs where MA scored regularly and set up a convincing win.

The 2nd XV recorded a remarkable victory against Warminster. The game was end to end and exhilarating with a total of 13 tries. Tries by Will, Angus, Luchino, Freddie, George and Ed took MA into the closing minutes just one score away from victory. Max then showed great skill, strength and composure to score the winning try.  43-42 win for MA.  A remarkable game for all involved - Angus and Charlie were named 'players of the match' but everyone deserves huge credit.

The new U14 team got their season off to a flying start recording a 26-14 victory.  It was a fantastic team effort with all the players contributing to ensure we got over the line.  Joshua deserves a mention for his 11 points as does Kay, Harry and Piers for their excellent defence.  The 'player of the match' was hard to pick with so many potential candidates however it was awarded to the Captain, Daniel, for his combination of aggressive defence, outstanding attacking breaks, unselfish distribution and two tries - one of which was fantastic, a 60m solo effort.

Hockey

The U15s made a good start to the season.  They lost the match but were playing against a large school and many of our girls were playing the sport for the first time.  The effort, commitment and desire shown by all the girls was very impressive.  India and Violet had excellent games in the midfield but 'player of the match' was Felicity who was playing in goal for the very first time and made a number of outstanding saves.
