Lower Sixth pupils studying art were fortunate enough to visit March Harvey's studio in Peckham on 19 June. It was a very informative experience as Marcus spoke about how he had had two jobs for over ten years before he could afford to dedicate his time solely to producing his own works of art. He spoke about art as being a vocation rather than a job or a lifestyle choice. The same group also visited the Giacometti exhibition at the Tate Modern which they thoroughly enjoyed. This was the UK's first major retrospective of Giocometti for twenty years. Celebrated as a sculptor, painter and draughtsman, Giacometti’s distinctive elongated figures are some of the most instantly recognisable works of modern art. This exhibition reasserts Giacometti’s place alongside the likes of Matisse, Picasso and Degas as one of the great painter-sculptors of the twentieth century. Closer to home the fourth form art and photography pupils spent a wonderful day at Lulworth Cove, sketching, painting and taking photographs. They also visited Durdle Door and Rawlesbury Camp on Bulbarrow Hill. Finally the fourth form photographers went to Win Green, Charlie Waite territory, to look at the landscape that had inspired the world renowned photographer to take his stunning images.
