MASPA tour of Hauser and Wirth Gallery

The first MASPA event of 2018 took place last Wednesday with a trip to Hauser & Wirth’s latest exhibition.

The visit to the gallery near Bruton, Somerset, started with coffee in the vibrant Roth Bar and Grill, designed by artists, Bjorn and Oddur Roth (the son and grandson of artist Dieter Roth) and gave guests the opportunity to admire some of the produce on display from the gallery's Durslade estate, which is also a working farm and supplies the restaurant.

A fascinating tour of the exhibition (entitled, 'The Land We Live In, The Land We Left Behind') followed, led by an expert guide who described how the gallery came about and gave an introduction to the exhibition itself, which aims to explore the 'contradictory nature of society's relationship to the rural'. The exhibition, curated by Adam Sutherland, features work by over 50 international artists and creatives, ranging from 1500 to the present day and includes a wide range of art work, artefacts, film, installations and practical presentations. This provided a stimulating and thought provoking tour through the various galleries for the party.

The tour was followed by a delicious lunch back in the Roth Bar and Grill and much discussion over the forthcoming MASPA trip to Italy! Thanks to Hauser & Wirth for their hospitality and to everyone who came along and made it such an enjoyable day.
