Milton Abbey School announces new Girls' House

Milton Abbey School will open its second girls' day and boarding House in September 2018 in response to the high demand for girls' places at the school.

This is very exciting news for Milton Abbey and a clear endorsement of its unique educational offer and the move to full co-education five years ago.

Magnus Bashaarat says, “It is now over eleven years since girls first joined Milton Abbey in the sixth form and five years since our move to full co-education.   Over the past few years the numbers of girls joining the School has increased to such an extent that Hodgkinson House, or Hughies as it is more commonly known, is now full and we are having to turn away prospective pupils.  This is testament to the huge success of co-education at Milton Abbey and in no small part to the happy, supportive and nurturing atmosphere that has been created in Hughies.  Girls are contributing at the highest level across all areas of school life in a way that would have been inconceivable only ten years ago.”

Milton Abbey’s unique educational offer is attracting record numbers of inquiries from prospective parents.   Magnus Bashaarat continues, “Milton Abbey offers a truly bespoke education for each child.   Pupils can choose to follow the traditional GCSE/ A Level route in to higher education and the world of work or they can opt to follow a more vocational route to the same destinations taking BTECs.”

The range of courses offered at Milton Abbey is “epic” in the words of Head of Sixth Form, Dr Josh Bradbury.   “We are leading the way in offering pupils a huge range of courses from which to choose - 15 A Level subjects and 11 BTEC courses in the sixth form alone.  No other independent school comes close to us in this regard.”

Mrs Emma Williams has been announced as the Housemistress for the new girls’ House, Damer House.  Emma currently teaches French and Spanish at Milton Abbey, helps with the School’s Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and is an Assistant Housemistress.   She has a First Class Honours degree from Newcastle University in French Studies and a PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages at University of Buckingham.   Before coming to teaching, Emma worked for World Association of Girl Guides and Girlguiding  (WAGGGS) for a number of years, delivering international events aimed at giving girls and young women a voice and enabling them to develop to their full potential.

Emma says of her appointment, “Working at Milton Abbey has been an eye-opening experience for me; in educational terms its range of both academic and vocational courses which allows pupils to create an educational package tailored to their needs and interests is unique.  Added to this is the ‘full-boarding’ offer with a plethora of activities and sports available seven days a week. Delivering such an offer is not for the faint-hearted and the last three years I have spent here have proven that every day brings a new opportunity, a new experience for both pupils and staff. I am thrilled to be appointed as the Housemistress of Damer House at a very exciting milestone in the future of Milton Abbey.”
