Sports Report: Week 5

A round-up of sports results from Week 5 of the Michaelmas Term by Mr Lawes, Head of Sport.

Swimming

The swimmers competed in a gala against Sherborne, Canford and Winchester. The squad performed extremely well, managing to secure second place beating both Sherborne and Canford. Emre and John impressed by breaking two school records in 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle. This is a fantastic achievement by the whole squad.

Golf

Milton Abbey Golf Club had their first taste of a national competition. It was a scratch competition and we unfortunately lost but played very well. Oscar, Hugo and Oli would have learnt a lot from the experience. They now go into the plate in which they will be hoping to do well.

Hockey

1st XI vs Leweston – won 2-1
This was a great response having lost to HCS on Tuesday. We open the scoring via a great goal scored by player of the match Annie. Leweston scored on the counter attack however we showed our dominance again in the final 10 minutes. With just 2 minutes left on the clock Sophie calmly pushed into the bottom corner to secure a fine win. Two games this week against Sexey’s and Bruton School for Girls.

2nd  XI vs HCS – lost 5-0
The 2nd XI had a frustrating afternoon. At times they competed well with HSC however they lost their composure at the start of the match which ultimately cost them. They are a better team than they showed on Saturday and need to re-group and work as a team with more determination if they want to improve. Tabs did well in defence and Laura in midfield. Hopefully we will see an improved performance in their next match.

U15 vs Leweston – won 1-0
A fantastic game of end to end hockey. There was little between the two teams and all the girls gave it their best. The goal and victory came from an excellent passing move which was brilliantly finished off by Ruby. Every player contributed in what was a fantastic team performance. Very well done Girls! - keep it up.

Sailing

vs Sherborne: lost 3-2
The first race was a close race which Sherborne won by one point. The second race was won by Charlie and Lucas with Harry and Ruby coming third to give us the victory. The third and fourth races were won by Sherborne however in the final race MA boats finished first, second and third. Lake sailing is new to many of our sailors and they performed very well.

Rugby

1st vs Sexey’s – won 36-7
We scored a try with the first passage of back play through Gabe G. We dominated in the forwards and showed fine handling skills to score 4 tries in the first half. The second half was scrappy but we managed to score 2 more before the end. The main negative for MA was an injury to Bug but Gabe F played well at scrum half in his place and Sam F scored a try on his 1st XV debut.

U15 vs Thomas Hardye
The U15s put in a brave performance against Thomas Hardye. George and Archie were outstanding in defence making tackle after tackle. Max and Joe ran strongly and always made ground. More work needs to be done on retaining possession in contact.

U14 vs Thomas Hardye
The U14s battled hard against a strong Thomas Hardye team. They tackled hard and put their body on the line. A few handling errors cost the team and more work is needed at the breakdown. Lots of positives against a big school and we look forward to Saturday's match.
