Sports Reports - Week 2

A round-up of the sports results from Week 2 of the Lent Term by Mr Lawes, Head of Sport.

Hockey

Possibly the toughest fixture of the season resulted in a loss for the 1st XI. Wells were well drilled. Oscar made some fantastic saves in goal earning himself MVP. Anton is another player worthy of a mention demonstrating some silky skills. The Abbey need to work hard to improve.

The 2nd XI lost 7-3 to Wells Cathedral. Piers put us a goal up but Wells came back to take the lead before Piers scored 2 more to complete his hat trick and make it 4-3. Wells finished stronger to win the match. Another mention for Johnny in goal who made some crucial saves.

The U15s played extremely well against Wells and on another day could have won. They were always a threat on the counter attack. Unfortunately Wells scored two late goals to win the match. Dan, Marcus and Tom all had fantastic matches. With better passing the team could be very good.

The U14s battled hard against a Wells team that contained three classy players. Bryn and George defended with great determination. Archie made some excellent saves. Joe worked very hard in midfield and Piers looked dangerous from short corners. Josh captained the team well. Man of the Match was Bryn.

Netball

The 1st VII were missing some key players due to injury and illness against Clayesmore.  The girls fought hard and the final score did not do them justice. There was some excellent defending from Hannah and Jess.  The players should not be disappointed with this defeat and should learn from a first class Clayesmore team.

The 2nd VII also had a hard match against Clayesmore. Thanks to Fran, Daisy and Izzy for all stepping up last minute due to people being off games. Player of the match has to go to Fran for never giving up and a special mention to Tilly, Tabs and Annie for their good play. Well done girls.

The U15s showed great resilience against Clayesmore’s height advantage.  Aly, Violet, India, Amelie and Rose all played very well. Rose impressing on her debut. India was player of the match and Leila played superbly as GK. A brave effort.

Football

Our second visit to Clayesmore and again the two teams shared the honours. This time the game ended 3-3 to make it 7-7 over the two matches. Milton Abbey scored first through Cesare and appeared untroubled until an own goal gave Clayesmore confidence. Our second goal was a superb solo effort by man of the match Denis who then put Benji through on goal to make it 3-3. Milo, Harry H, Harry P and Alex also deserve a mention for their defence. A decider at home in February.
