Sports Results - Week 1

A round-up of sports results from week 1 of the Michaelmas Term by Mr Lawes, Head of Sport.

Badminton

Milton Abbey fielded 5 players for the School’s first ever badminton fixture against Warminster. Captain Ollie and his Vice Captain Steve were narrowly beaten in the opening match and this set the pattern for the afternoon. The final singles match was a thriller and highlighted the fantastic effort and attitude on display. We look forward to the return match and we’re sure the players will work hard in training to improve.

Rugby

1st XV – Won 40-7
The 1st XV made an outstanding start to the season with a convincing victory over Warminster. A determined defence held MA’s attacks until Gabe scored the first try. The game continued to be close, but MA scored through Captain Matteo to ensure a comfortable half time lead. Further tries from Bug, George and Sam as well as a second for Gabe and a hat trick for Matteo completed a fine afternoon. We still have plenty to work on but it was an encouraging start. Special mention to James, Ben, Seb and Harry for producing an excellent performance on their first team debuts.

2nd XI – Won 39-5
Last year’s highly successful U15 team continued their good form as the 2nd XV. The try scoring started early and continued throughout the match as MA dominated. Tries from Maxim, Max, Dan, Archie and Will lead to a high scoring 39-5 win to open the season. A great start.

U15 – Lost 0-41
The U15s started strongly, running hard and making some fine tackles on the hefty Warminster players. In the second half MA heads went down and the space opened up for Warminster who ran in some easy tries. There is a lot of potential in the side though and hard work will surely pay off.

U14 – Won 41-12
A fantastic start to the season, MA played some superb rugby. 20 players made their MA debut with many involved in their first competitive rugby match. Isaac, James, Oliver and Elliot were attacking threats whenever they got the ball and the passing from James and Max created lots of chances. There is plenty to work on but this is a really encouraging start.

Football
Despite our best effort on the pitch, playing against Canford in the first week was always going to be a challenge.  Although we resisted for a good 20 minutes, the opposition was too strong and well organised. They played very quick ball and we were too slow to respond.  In the coming training sessions we will need to improve on holding our position and releasing the ball early.

Golf
It was a tight match against Warminster in the first match of the year. Oli and Oscar won the 8th and chipped in on the final hole to halve their match meaning it all came down to the second match. Hamish and Hugo tried to fight back but lost 2'n'1 giving Warminster the match. Playing through the battling rain the boys were a credit to the school and we will look to get our revenge in a couple of weeks in the return fixture.

Swimming
The first event of the season for the swim squad was a time trial against Warminster.  The senior squad proved to be strong opponents and won 6 out of the 8 races.  Congratulations to Emre, Roo, Jason and Alec for performing so well.  As the season progresses and fitness increases, we anticipate being able to take an excellent team to our first gala in October.
