U15s Rugby Team – Unbeaten Season

Saturday’s games versus Clayesmore were always going to be important fixtures for the Milton Abbey rugby teams but none more so than for the U15s who were yet to be beaten this season. As it turned out this excellent team had another fantastic game, winning 31 – 22.

This was an incredibly tight game with both teams desperate for a win to finish their seasons.  Milton Abbey were clearly nervous at the start (the supporters had travelled from as far away as Milan and Nairobi after all!) and Clayesmore took an early lead going up 10-0 within the first ten minutes.  Would everything unravel at the final hurdle for the U15s?  Would the boys be able to find their rhythm?

Two scintillating tries by Gabriel and precision kicking by James put Milton Abbey in the lead. Confidence was restored but this was not to be an easy procession for the team; Clayesmore were not going to roll over.  Three further excellent team tries scored by Max, Archie and Alex seemed to have the game sewn up for Milton Abbey.  However two quick tries by Clayesmore brought the game to a nerve racking conclusion. Could Milton Abbey hold on until the end?

After what seemed like a lifetime the final whistle eventually blew signalling the end the game. They had done it! Played ten, won ten! Undefeated!

Of the final match multi-talented coach Chris Hill (also Coach of the Dorset U15 Cricket side) said, “Talent won the game but hard work, commitment and teamwork has brought us to this point!”

Coach Will Fraser said of the team afterwards, “It has been a pleasure to work with this determined and talented group of young men.  They have worked so hard, desperate to improve and get better every week.  Every player bought into the extra sessions run by Strength and Conditioning Coach Josh Ovey on Thursday evenings, and our superior fitness was definitely a factor today.  The players understood that success would only come from hard work.  I am so proud of the boys.”

Louise Flanagan who along with many other Milton Abbey parents has been a stalwart supporter of the team over the past term said, “The boys treated us all to a fantastic rugby finale which was well worth the muddy boots and more than made up for suffering on the cold touchline all season!”
