Milton Abbey School Parents' Association

Welcome to MASPA – the Milton Abbey School Parents’ Association.

MASPA was established in 2014 with the aim of providing current parents with a range of opportunities to meet each other socially in informal settings each term.  MASPA has already been so well-received and supported by parents, and we thank everyone who has come along to one of our ‘Coffee Stops’ or organised events.

Upcoming events in our MASPA calendar are listed below. Alternatively, our MASPA calendar for each term is available to download from the iPoint box on this page.

We aim to keep our calendar of events as varied and entertaining as possible and would welcome any suggestions parents may have for future events.  Additionally if there are any parents who would like to get involved in planning and suggesting future events do please come along to one of our planning meetings each term (meetings are held twice termly, once in London and once at the School).

For more information on MASPA or to book events, please contact maspa@miltonabbey.co.uk.

18 May, midday: Guided Tour of David Hockney Exhibition at Tate Britain
David Hockney is one of the most popular and influential British artists of the twentieth century; his exhibition at Tate Britain is said to be his most comprehensive exhibition yet.  It gathers together an extensive selection of his most famous works celebrating his achievements in painting, drawing, print, photography and video across six decades.
As he approaches his 80th birthday, Hockney’s style and ways of working continues to change embracing new technologies as he goes. From his portraits and images of Los Angeles swimming pools, through to his drawings and photography, Yorkshire landscapes and most recent paintings – some of which have never been seen before in public  –  this exhibition shows how the roots of each new direction lay in the work that came before. The Tate describes this as “A once-in-a-lifetime chance to see these unforgettable works together.”
Numbers are restricted so please RSVP to maspa@miltonabbey.co.uk as soon as possible to book your place.   Tickets £26 each.
20 – 22 May: MASPA Wine and Port Tasting Trip to Portugal
For the third year running we are organising a MASPA wine tasting trip overseas. Having visited Champagne in 2015 and Tuscany in 2016 we are now off to Portugal, staying in Oporto and Pinhăo in the Douro valley, very much the destination of the moment for wine,  and  of course, port enthusiasts.
The trip will be based around visiting the two great British port families - The Fladgate Partnership, run by Adrian Bridge and his wife Natasha, and the Symington family estate, run by Paul Symington with his brothers, sisters and the rest of the family. These two houses own many of the great port names and have been making port for hundreds of years and the Symington have more recently been making, in Patrick McGrath’s words, “some seriously good wines”.
We will stay at The Vintage House hotel in Pinhăo, Douro Valley and in the award winning Yeatman hotel in Oporto.  These luxurious hotels are among the best in Portugal and the weekend promises to be truly memorable.  We are extremely grateful to the generosity of Steve and Kirsten Gates who are covering much of the cost of this trip, enabling parents’ payments to be donated straight in to the Milton Abbey Fund.
25 May, 2pm:  “A Creative Chocolate Experience” with Chocolatier Amanda Smith of Amuse Chocolates, Symondsbury Estate, Dorset

13th June, 6.30pm – 8.30pm: Champagne, Sparkling and Rosé wine tasting, led by Patrick McGrath, Chairman of Governors at Durrants Hotel, London
Patrick McGrath Master of Wine, old Miltonian and our Chair of Governors, is kindly hosting three wine tastings for MASPA spread over the current academic year.  As those parents who have come along to the first two events will tell you, these sessions are great fun and are as much for wine buffs as for those who want to have a better understanding of the world of wine.  This will be the last of the tastings and will have a definite focus on summer as we will be tasting a range of champagnes, sparkling and rosė wines.  Patrick will share eight to ten wines with us, explaining how the different styles are made and giving us his view on what the future holds.  Join us for a wonderful evening at Durrants Hotel, George Street, London, owned and managed  by Milton Abbey parent Ben Miller.
Please book your place at maspa@miltonabbey.co.uk  - the cost for the wine tasting is £41 per person.   We will have supper after the tasting at Durrants Hotel so we can continue to enjoy the wines and the company.  Price for supper tbc.
Thursday 15th June, 10am – 3pm:  A Midsummer Flower Day with Polly Nicholson, Blackland Park, Wiltshire
