Brilliant boarding for armed forces families

Milton Abbey School has a proud heritage and connection to the armed forces. In 1955, pioneering headmaster and retired Royal Navy officer, Cdr. R. H. Hodgkinson, committed the school to providing a broad, enriching and caring education, with the children of service personnel firmly in mind.

That commitment endures in our 'Learn Differently' approach. Our deliberately small size, extensive range of academic and vocational courses, packed co-curricular and sports programmes, and exceptional pastoral care provide exactly the right balance of challenge, adventure, opportunity and support that we know armed forces families seek.

We work with families to design personalised programmes of study to fit pupils' current interests, and their future aspirations, whatever their starting point. Our excellent staff-to-pupil ratio and our profoundly different approach to learning enables every child to thrive and achieve their personal best.

Add to that our safe and stunning rural location and you have an educational environment that is particularly suited to military families who seek the continuity, security and community of boarding school life. With around 85% of our students attending on a full boarding basis, there isn't a dull evening or lonely weekend in sight!

We have an incredibly diverse student body, with pupils attending from all over the UK and further afield. Wherever they are from, your son or daughter will find a welcoming environment, where staff know them as individuals and friends are made for life. This can be particularly reassuring for armed forces families who are subject to regular redeployment, in the UK or abroad.

The children of service personnel thrive at Milton Abbey. We are proud each year to hear of recent leavers embarking on military journeys of their own or, of course, finding different passions in their chosen university courses and careers. Our alumni include a number of people with prominent military careers, including Milton Abbey School governors Colonel Oliver Chamberlain and Colonel Neil Tomlin OBE, and the Governor of Edinburgh Castle, Major General Alastair Bruce OBE.

Generous support available alongside the Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA)

We know Milton Abbey is an excellent choice for armed forces families, so we want it to be a feasible one too.

We are accredited to accept the full Continuity of Education Allowance. Those families who are eligible for this grant, and therefore seeking a boarding place for their child, can also access generous bursaries to ensure that parental contributions are at the lowest levels possible when claiming the CEA.
